In 1988, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the first World AIDS Day in an effort to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS issues. HIV awareness week now take place each year from 24 November - 1 December, culminating in World AIDS Day on 1 December.

In Australia, World AIDS Day aims to raise awareness in the community about issues surrounding HIV, including the need to support, understand and not discriminate against people living with HIV, and the continued need to prevent the spread of HIV through means such as safe sex practices.

2011 is the 30th anniversary of the first confirmed case of HIV/AIDS, and the 20th anniversary of the first public wearing of the red ribbon by actor Jeremy Irons at the 1991 Tony Awards.

Information on what will be happening in your State and Territory will be added shortly.
