2008 AIDS Awareness Week


Thursday, 20 November
6.30pm. Screening of Journeys into the Unknown: A digital storytelling production and Opening Night Launch of the 4th Annual HIV/AIDS Poster Art Competition/Show in the Bendigo Library Foyer, Hargreaves Street. To start the night, digital stories of people living with HIV will be shown in the Campbell Theatrette. Following on, the exhibition will be officially opened with announcements of this year’s winning entries for the youth poster competition. On display will be entries from the youth poster competition and health promotion campaign posters from years past. Light refreshments will be available with special guests to be announced.

Friday, 21 November – Monday, 1 December
Monday to Friday 10.00am – 7.00pm and Saturday 10.00am – 1.00pm. HIV/AIDS Art Poster Show in the Bendigo Library Foyer, Hargreaves Street. A retrospective display of health promotion campaign posters from previous year’s and from around the world. Includes exhibition of this year’s entries for the youth poster competition.

Friday, 21 November
6.30pm. Opening Night Launch of the Red Ribbon Art Competition and Exhibition at BRIT’s Gallery B, Chapel Street, Bendigo. The exhibition will be officially launched with announcements of winning art work. Light refreshments will be available with special guests to be announced.

Saturday, 22 November – Monday, 1 December
Open daily 10.00am – 6.00pm. Red Ribbon Art Exhibition at BRIT’s Gallery B, Chapel Street Bendigo. Entries from the Red Ribbon Art Competition will be on exhibition. Art work in various mediums from a range of local & regional artists will be on display, with some of the works up for silent auction. Also showing will be the Digital Stories of people living with HIV/AIDS.

Saturday, 29 November
10.00am – 3.00pm. Community Information and Resource Stalls. Bendigo Market Place (Bendigo), Centro Lansell (Kangaroo Flat) and Hargreaves Mall (Bendigo). Information stalls, selling red ribbons for support of people living with HIV/AIDS and offering free health promotion resources will be set up and staffed by volunteers.

Sunday, 30 November
12.00 – 6.00pm. Red Ribbon Concert at the Civic Gardens, Bendigo. Pack a picnic lunch, gather your friends and family for what promises to be an afternoon of fun and relaxation and an array of local musicians, bands and performers showcasing their talents. Afternoon sausage sizzle, free resources / information and of course, lots of red ribbons will also be available on the day.

Sunday 30 November
6.30pm. Remembrance Celebration at the Civic Gardens. Remembering and paying tribute to those lost to HIV/AIDS while celebrating the lives of those living with HIV/AIDS.

Monday 1 December
10.00am – 3.00pm. Community Information and Resource Stall in the Hargreaves Mall (Bendigo). Information stall, selling red ribbons for support of people living with HIV/AIDS and offering free health promotion resources will be set up and staffed by volunteers.

Through to 5 December
Toy Drive for Kids Affected by HIV/AIDS. Toy drive sponsored by Friends Alike of Bendigo and CAN – Seeking donations of new toys for children affected by HIV/AIDS. Donations can be dropped off to the CAN Resource Centre (M-F / 9am-5pm) or ring to arrange pick-up.

Photographic Exhibition
10–30 November, Gasworks Art Park, 21 Graham Street, Albert Park. Photographer Katie Langmore will exhibit photographs of community projects and people living with HIV/AIDS in South Africa. Supported by the Victorian AIDS Council.

Street Appeal
28 November, 7am-7pm, Melbourne CBD. Victorian AIDS Council volunteers will be selling red ribbons on the streets of Melbourne. Volunteers needed, call 9865 6700 for more information.

Red ribbon merchandise
October, November & December 2008. Red ribbons, wristbands and ribbon badges are available from the Victorian AIDS Council to sell on counters at local businesses, your workplace or to friends and family. To order a box call 9856 6700.

Film night
Sunday November 30, the Victorian AIDS Council presents an Open-Air Cinema Screening of Shortbus at JOY’s rooftop garden.

Drama Down Under Show
Friday November 28, 11:30pm, Victorian AIDS Council Health Promotion Team present the Drama Down Underwear Show at the Market Hotel.

World AIDS Day Memorial
1 December 2008, 6pm, Positive Living Centre, 51 Commercial Road, Prahran.
The evening will include the World AIDS Day Remembrance ceremony where we remember all those we have loved and lost throughout the HIV/AIDS epidemic.

Red Ribbon Art Competition and Show


The 2008 AIDS Awareness Week organisers are seeking local and regional artists to enter and exhibit in the ‘Red Ribbon Art Show’.

All mediums are accepted. The only direction provided is that work of art must include a red ribbon.

Entries close November 12th 2008. CASH PRIZES. Amateur and/or first time exhibitors welcome.

Accepted artwork will be exhibited in the ‘Red Ribbon Art Show’

Winning entries will be announced at the opening night of the show, to be held Friday November 20 starting at 6.30pm.

Youth Poster Competition and HIV/AIDS Poster Show



We are seeking local and regional young people 18 years and under to submit posters to help promote AIDS Awareness Week 2008.

Entries close November 19th 2008. Winning entries will receive IPODS and other great prizes.

Artwork will be displayed at the HIV/AIDS Poster Show, Bendigo Library foyer.

Health Promotion Posters from previous year’s campaigns will also be on display.

Winning entries will be announced at the opening night of the show, to be held Thursday November 19 starting at 6.30pm.

The public are encouraged to buy a Red Ribbon, the symbol of HIV/AIDS awareness that represents support for those living with and affected by HIV/AIDS.
Ribbon sellers will be located throughout the CBD from 7am to 7pm.

Candlelight Memorial, Honour Every Death – Value Every Life
An annual community based HIV/AIDS event held across the nation to remember those who have died from HIV/AIDS.
Pinky Flat, War Memorial Drive (North Side of River Torrens, Next to Morphett Street Bridge, Across from Next Gen Gym).
6pm for dinner (provided) and 6.30pm for formal proceedings. No alcohol permitted.

Doves and Ribbons Day 2008

A day dedicated to raising awareness of HIV/AIDS sufferers throughout the world. This year the money raised will be donated to OzCots - a project launched in 2003 by Canberra-based Despina Voudouris - to support Cotlands, a South African orphanage for HIV/AIDS children.
